We’ve been getting loads of requests to see more photos from our Italy trip so we’ll be sharing some highlights on our blog over the next few days from each of the amazing cities we were able to visit on our 17 day adventure. By the way, we LOVED having so many of you join in the fun via instagram and facebook while we were actually there! Thank you for the many wonderful comments and “likes” along the way. Most of the time, we only had internet access while in our hotel so we’d post a highlight or two from our adventures that day before we went to bed. With the nine hour time difference, it worked out perfectly that all of our friends in the states would be just getting up. It was so much fun to wake up each morning to find that our friends and family had left all kinds of social media love while we were resting our weary traveler heads. It made our hearts so happy!

The first stop on our journey was beautiful city of Positano along the Amalfi coast, located along the southern side of Italy. After countless hours on a plane, followed by three separate trains rides and a 30 minute cab ride, this amazing place was truly a sight for sore eyes. Positano is often referred to as the “Jewel of the Amalfi Coast.” When we finally arrived it took no time at all to understand why. It’s enchanting – far beyond what words can describe. From the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea to the pink and terracotta colored buildings draped in vines and flowers – it’s an incredible place, unlike anywhere else on earth. It’s most prominent feature – the stairs! Since the city is literally built into a mountainside, every pathway and corridor is a staircase. There is pretty much one main road that weaves from one end of the city to the other, but to get anywhere, visitors face an uphill (or downhill) climb. Let’s just say we did an excellent job of combating all the rich Italian meals were were enjoying because we worked it off immediately. Steep, tiny stair wells = excellent cardio work out. And some pretty buff calf muscles to boot! (Check out the video at the end of the post to really get a feel for what we mean.)

Several times a day, the bells at The Church of St Maria Assunta would ring and fill the city with the most amazing sounds. Here’s a quick little video of what it was like standing on our balcony when it happened.

How crazy is this? The key to our room was an ACTUAL key! No plastic swipe card here – that wouldn’t be near authentic enough for this town.

Since we knew we’d be eating Italian food for three straight weeks, we had made it a point not to eat ANY Italian food – pasta or pizza – for three months leading up to the trip! And let me tell you, our first few meals were beyond heavenly! A simple margarita pizza or plate of fettuccine Alfredo tasted AH-MA-ZING to our Italian deprived taste buds. Our very first meal in town was extra special thanks to the help of a rather delightful server. (See our instagram post for why.)

We called this little guy the “Sea Dog” because he was always patiently laying on the dock, waiting for his owner to come back from a day at sea. It was sweet – and made us miss our puppies a tiny bit less every time we saw him. Positano Italy-31

We had the tremendous pleasure of photographing Nina & James’ Honeymoon Session while we were there so we had to throw in a couple of our favorite behind the scenes shots too!

On the last day, Ryan decided he just had to do a timelapse video on his iPhone of what it was like walking from our hotel to the street level so we’d always remember all the crazy stairs! You can pretty much “feel the burn” just watching this. Ha ha! (Switch the player to HD for better quality)

Even as we were pulling away on a boat to our next destination, we couldn’t help but grab a few last looks at this amazing place! It will certainly have a piece of our heart forever. John Steinbeck hit the nail on the head when he said that Positano, Italy is “a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you are gone.”
