It was March 1998. The halls of Corona del Sol high school were buzzing with talk of only one thing . . . Prom.  Who asked who. What color dress was going to be the most popular. Who’s date was going to rent a limo.  As a sophomore, I should have been a year away from caring about all the Prom buzz.  Except for the fact that I was dating a Junior.  Ryan and I had been dating for about two months and I was incredibly anxious for him to ask me to be his Prom date. One Saturday morning, he asked if I wanted to go on a hike up to South Mountain. I agreed, and thought nothing of it.

Little did I know, a few hours before we were scheduled to arrive, Ryan and his BFF Matthew were making some special preparations.  They had done some hiking of their own and picked out a beautiful spot on top of one of the rocky peaks.  They lowered a cooler of supplies and Ryan’s guitar down the side of the peak onto one of the ledges below in preparation for a very special surprise.

Ryan came to pick me up a little while later and we headed to the mountain for our hike.  I was totally unaware that anything was out of the ordinary as we hiked around for about an hour. As we made it up to the top of the peak, Ryan suggested that we stop for a water break. We sat down on some rocks and took in the view for a few minutes.  Suddenly I noticed that something was out of place.  There was a large stick shoved in between some rocks with the end of a rope tied around it. I pointed it out and Ryan decided to investigate.  He un-wedged the stick and started to pull on the rope.  After a few good tugs, a large black object came over the side of the rocks – it was a guitar case!  I started to laugh as Ryan pulled out his all too familiar black, Takamine guitar.  He started to sing me a sweet little tune he wrote and my heart felt like it would burst!

Half way through the second verse, I heard a tambourine start to tap the beat! Where on earth was that coming from?  A glance over the side of the peak revealed that Matthew had been crouching down on the ledge the whole time, ready to add a little accompaniment and keeping an eye on the supplies while we were hiking.  (As you can guess he took the photo of my reaction from his perch below us before I even knew he was there!)

The song ended with the very question I’d been waiting to hear, “Will you go to Prom with me?”  After I gave a very excited “yes”, Ryan pulled up the cooler and whipped out the makings of a delicious picnic!  We were kind enough to let Matthew come up from his perch and take a couple photos of us too :-)

I think it’s safe to say that it was an pretty memorable day! And by far the greatest, most epic Prom ask EVER!
